Residents of the borough and anti-World Cup collectives announced the closure of Calzada de Tlalpan next Saturday, March 28, just before the friendly match between Mexico and Portugal at the Banorte Stadium, in protest of the construction works and the urban impact of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
On social media, the Neighborhood Assembly against Mega Constructions, Tlalpan Coyoacán, issued a call to block the avenue starting at 12:00 PM, under the bridge near the stadium, where they plan to hold a "mega football match," a self-managed market, and other activities.
These groups have expressed their disagreement with how the organization of the FIFA 2026 World Cup has affected the neighborhoods near the stadium, denouncing an increase in rental prices, phenomena such as touristification and gentrification, as well as water scarcity.
Due to this situation, the so-called 'Anti-World Cup Assembly' called for a "total boycott of the World Cup" and to protest against the sporting event during the grand opening of the Banorte Stadium.
In its Facebook account, the assembly has shared videos of previous demonstrations in the Santa Úrsula Coapa neighborhood, where "anti-FIFA matches" are organized around the stadium.
